There are now more reasons than ever to generate onsite power in Ontario. Electricity demand is expected to double in the next twenty years. Energy prices continue to skyrocket. There is an aging stock of centralized generating facilities that lack the capabilities to handle this demand. Highlighted by the lack of industry and government vision, an energy leadership void has been created.
Total Power has taken a proactive approach and realizes that power outages are increasing in frequency and causing significant economic loss and unnecessary human hardship. As a result, we are developing partnerships with leading-edge power generating firms to create new concepts to provide electric service redundancy through the use of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) or co-generation.
Co-generation involves capturing waste heat from power production and putting it to some useful purpose at the customer site. The development of a co-generation system has the potential for over 90% fuel utilization efficiency in industrial, commercial and residential applications. Co-generation combines a "prime power" system such as reciprocating engines with waste heat recovery equipment for the production of hot water, steam, cooling and mechanical energy and regeneration of desiccants for humidity control in buildings.
Large-scale co-generation systems are used in the pulp and paper, chemical manufacturing, healthcare and petroleum refining industries. The emergence of smaller scale power generation systems opens new opportunities for cost-effective CHP in other manufacturing industries and commercial buildings. In certain settings, waste heat can be used for hot water, chilled water or steam that can be circulated through pipes to several thermal energy users. Supplying both electricity and heat to mission critical operations, we can now enable facilities such as hospitals to be more independent from the grid, hence not susceptible to power outages.
Along with our partners, Total Power is striving to bring these new energy technologies on board. The co-generation systems we install use "green" technology that is both efficient and cost-effective.
